The Lightscrapes project is dedicated to photographs of the joy of vision, the joy of discovery, and the joy of being alive. Lightscrapes is a personal project that focuses on aesthetically beautiful photographs that are at the same time intellectually intriguing images. We hope that these images are more than just a another pretty landscape, lovely sunset, stunning portrait, or sumptuous still life. Perhaps this is an unusual or archaic position, but what had historically been considered “the beautiful” in art was the combination of the visual as well as the intellectually intriguing.
Photographers worth their salt strive to record the beauty of this world as a collection of separate instances. Each picture, be it dramatic landscape, tranquil seascape, symbolic still life, or complex urban scene, is a unique moment in time that will not occur again. However, not only are these images singular, that need to stand on their own as works of art, but are signs of the photographer’s way of looking at the world. Through a collection of photographs is a desire to achieve a greater understanding of the meaning of the things in front of the lens than is possible through a single image, to explore a beauty and perception beyond the distinct picture.
