Stone Pine Tree with the First and Second Temples of Hera at Paestum, Campania, Italy
Stone pine stands between the First and Second Temples of Hera in this landscape photograph from the ancient Greek ruins at Paestum in southern Campania. Built in the 7th and 5th centuries, respectively, the temples are part of a complex constructed by Greek colonists to the area. Full and round, the ubiquitous Italian stone pine tree dominates between the two ancient temples. Hera, the goddess of marriage, women, and childbirth support the fertility symbol of the stone pine which continuously produces cones.
