Cloth Lilies and Inscription of Mother, Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, New Orleans
Cast concrete urn with cloth lilies at Lafayette Cemetery No 1 in the New Orleans Garden District. Tones of greys and browns dominate the photograph with points of color to provide relief. Brilliant white cloth lilies give sparkle and a sense of the midday New Orleans sun light. Carved in the base of the urn is the word mother giving voice to the most basic relationship of our species with the whites and lilies symbolic of its purity. Carved letters in the marble of the background are reminiscent of the pedestals of ancient Roman statuary.
