Lost Tourist Women on Phones - Lower East Side, New York City
Two women, who have lost their bearings, check directions on their phones in this street photograph from the Lower East Side section of New York. Standing in front of a construction fence, part of the neighborhood’s increasing gentrification, they represent the new types of visitors to this once blighted neighborhood. The Lower East Side was historically a slum for new immigrants to Manhattan. Over the past few decades it has increasingly become a shopping and partying area for the affluent young, adventurous enough to venture away from the more settled parts of Manhattan.
